Comparison of blood lactate elimination in individuals with paraplegia and able-bodied individuals during active recovery from exhaustive exercise

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to compare blood lactate elimination between individuals with paraplegia (P) and able-bodied (AB) individuals after strenuous arm exercise. METHODS: Eight P and 8 AB men (matched for age, height, and weight) participated in this study. We present a man with parkinsonism detected by the observation of medical scooters propulsion. His manual handicap scooters propulsion technique was observed to include rapid, brief, low-power strokes resembling the marche petit pas (walking with tiny steps) phenomenon of parkinsonism. We videotaped his wheelchair propulsion and compared him with ten age-, gender-, and diagnosis-matched controls. This is the first detailed report of how parkinsonian features may affect manual wheelchair propulsion. Influence of hand cycling on physical capacity in the rehabilitation of persons with a spinal cord injury: a longitudinal cohort study

RESULTS: A significantly larger increment in Vo(2)peak, POpeak, and elbow extension strength was found in subjects with paraplegia during clinical rehabilitation. No such effect was found in subjects with tetraplegia. In the postrehabilitation period, no influence of hand cycling on any outcome measure was found in subjects with paraplegia or subjects with tetraplegia. CONCLUSIONS: After correction for baseline values and confounders, regular hand cycling (once a week or more) appeared to be beneficial for improving aerobic physical capacity in persons with paraplegia during clinical rehabilitation. The small and heterogeneous study groups may have hampered the finding of positive results of hand cycling in persons with tetraplegia.

A preliminary study on the impact of pushrim-activated power-assist wheelchairs among individuals with tetraplegia

OBJECTIVES: This preliminary study was to evaluate the impact of pushrim- activated
power wheelchairs (PAPAWs) on mobility, community participation, satisfaction, and psychosocial impact among individuals with tetraplegia. DESIGN: Fifteen manual wheelchair users with tetraplegia completed a 4-wk protocol including a 2-wk trial where they used their personal wheelchairs for mobility and a 2-wk trial where they were provided with a PAPAW and could choose either wheelchair for mobility. The mobility levels with both wheelchairs were recorded by a datalogger. Participants completed daily questionnaires regarding community participation and medical scooters their satisfaction with the wheelchair used. The Psychosocial Impact of Assistive Devices Scale was used to compare the psychosocial impact of PAPAWs with their personal wheelchairs. RESULTS: Participants chose to use PAPAWs and their personal wheelchairs at a similar frequency in the PAPAW trial. The distances traveled with both wheelchairs were not statistically different (P = 0.09). Participants traveled significantly faster with PAPAWs (P = 0.03). PAPAWs did not result in significantly greater community participation, satisfaction, and psychosocial impacts than the personal wheelchairs. CONCLUSIONS: PAPAWs could be a viable mobility option for individuals with tetraplegia, which can provide independent mobility especially for outdoor activities. A user’s preference, life style, physical conditions, transportation issues, and environmental factors should be considered in prescribing such a device.

Wheelchair users rely on their power wheelchairs for mobility for extended periods of time every day. Many times, we human beings waste time feeling guilty. By doing this we are wasting our own time and energy. When we get to the point of the deadline for that project, task or chore and we’re feeling so guilty - ‘oh why didn’t I do something sooner? I should have spent more time! Why did I spend my time on that thing and not get this project started?’ As human beings need to learn that it is okay and to recognize that’s how we cope best, we work best under pressure. So stop feeling guilty about it! Stop beating yourself up, because when we stop beating ourselves up and wasting energy on the guilt, we have more time and more energy to invest in the project, chore or task we want to complete.

The other thing that we do, in order to not apply the pressure, is we hide behind our responsibilities. I used to do this so well - hide behind my responsibilities. Today I just assisted my husband in setting up his financial filing system, I sure did not want to spend time doing it, however I want the end result!! The end result of the nice clean, tidy organized paperwork resulting in his taxes being completed on time. I put the pressure on myself, assisted him and now I am very glad I did. Not only did the paperwork issue get better but so did our relationship because my husband felt much supported.

We need to focus on the results we want instead of hiding behind the excuses of ‘I don’t have the time,I’ve got to go to work, I’ve got to take my daughter to soccer. I have got to take my dog to the vet’. Yes, those are all things that need to be done. However when we decide that achieving a certain task/chore/business is a priority that we could rearrange our time or give up some unnecessary activities to free up time if we really wanted to. If we really want that result, we could get it done, it just takes a decision. We will then stop investing in the guilt. we will stop hiding behind the responsibilities and figure out a way to make it happen.

There is a universal law, like the law of gravity called the Law of Growth;. In order to exist, we need to grow. How we grow is our choice. What seeds do we want to plant? Do we want to plant the seeds of not getting something done? Or do we want the seeds of success habits, applying the pressure and stepping into the successful life that we know we deserve. We all deserve a successful life! Ask yourself “am I applying the correct pressure on myself to create my successful life?” I hope you are!

Now that I’ve got your attention, Let me explain.
When I’m talking about the “F” word, it’s got nothing to do with swearing, nor the word that gets kids giggling when they overhear it in conversation, or perhaps on the TV. But it’s effect on your home business opportunity, mlm or other online venture can be equally as alarming.
The word is “Free”.
Sure, there are obviously those that have made huge amounts of money using free stuff, but my personal experience has shown that my success is a direct comparison to the depth that I’ve dug into my wallet. Why is this?
Well, for starters, we say that we’re looking for a business opportunity. Whether its a turnkey home business for moms or a home business for baby boomers, doesn’t really matter.
Now I’ve been self-employed for the majority of my life, but I have never owned a business, online or offline, that has been free. Neither would I want to. It’s the investment - cold hard cash - that ensures you keep to the right path.
It’s the cash that you depart with that ensures that you treat your venture as a business, and not a hobby. It’s the bank manager standing over you, making you feel as if it’s his own personal money.
My experience tells me that its got a lot to do with how we value our money. I don’t know if you can follow what I’m getting at, but I have found that anything that I got for free never held my interest, so there was a fat chance of being successful.
I also think that the free methods, systems and tools we have available have contributed to the online marketers disease of JFPTP syndrome. And what is that? No doubt you’ll recognize it when I spell it out. Its the “Jump From Pillar To Post” Syndrome.
The incessant dabbling with any and everything that passes into our inbox, in the vain attempt to find the legitimate make money online ways that are going to fill our bank accounts and allow us to work at the kitchen table in our underwear. I think that’s something best left to your imagination.
Once you invest in something, there’s this little voice we have that makes us justify our spending, so we doggedly carry on as long as we possibly can before we even think of giving up. Many is the time that I’ve found a residual income home business and spent more than I intended to, but this seems to be one of the reasons that I stick like glue and get as much out of it as I possibly can.

I know you’ve heard it all before, but it’s worth of a reminder. Do you honestly think that McDonald’s is the best hamburger you can get? I think not. There’s bound to be a much better hamburger produced by your local mom and pop hamburger joint. If they could only plug into a marketing system like McDonald’s use, they would have success spilling out of their every pore. It’s the systems that work, or to put it in one word, duplication.
When you next come across something that sounds to good to be true, promising to make you squillions in cash before you can blink, take another look. Look outside the box. If it belongs to the four letter word brigade - it’s free - that’s giving you a pretty good indication of what it’s worth.
Look for duplication. You will need to involve other people. Is this something that you can see other people getting value out of? Because that’s what it boils down to. Operate your own home business opportunity, mlm or whatever venture you are involved with keeping in mind that your fastest way to success is by helping others.
Sounds like a line out of a bad TV advertisement, and no doubt you’ve heard it all before. But I just thought I’d repeat it again, because it’s just so true, and maybe you just haven’t listened properly yet.
