Demographic and socioeconomic factors associated with disparity in wheelchair customizability among people with traumatic spinal cord injury

OBJECTIVES: To determine if a standard of care for wheelchair provision exists within the participating centers and if there is disparity in wheelchair customizability among the study sample. DESIGN: Convenience sample survey. SETTING: Thirteen Model Spinal Cord Injury Systems that provide comprehensive rehabilitation for people with traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) and that are part of the national database funded through the US Department of Education. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 412 people with SCI who use wheelchairs over 40 hours a week. INTERVENTION: Survey information was obtained from subjects via telephone and in-person interviews and from the national database. Collected information included age, race, education, level of injury, and wheelchair funding source. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Number and type (manual or power) of wheelchairs. Wheelchair customizability as defined by design features (eg, adjustable axle position, programmable controls). RESULTS: Ninety-seven percent of manual wheelchair users and 54% of power wheelchairs users had customizable wheelchairs. No power wheelchair user received a wheelchair without programmable controls. Minorities with low socioeconomic backgrounds (low income, Medicaid/Medicare recipients, less educated) were more likely to have standard manual and standard programmable power wheelchairs. Older subjects were also more likely to have standard programmable power wheelchairs and handicap scooters. CONCLUSIONS: The standard of care for manual wheelchair users with SCI is a lightweight and customizable wheelchair. The standard of care for power wheelchairs users has programmable controls. Unfortunately, socioeconomically disadvantaged people were less likely to receive customizable wheelchairs.

Appearance in Other Countries

In the United States, the breed gained wider recognition following a 1928 American Kennel Gazette article, “Meet the Labrador Retriever”. Before this time, the AKC had only registered 23 Labradors in the country,6 in part because US and UK hunting styles had different requirements.15 Labradors acquired popularity as hunting puppies for sale during the 1920’s and especially after World War II, as they gained recognition as combining some of the best traits of the two favourite United States breeds as both game finders and water labrador puppies for sale.15

Outside North America and Western Europe, the Labrador arrived later. For example, the Russian Retriever Club traces the arrival of Labradors to the late 1960s, as household pets of diplomats and others in the foreign ministry.16 The establishment of the breed in the Commonwealth of Independent States (ex-USSR) was initially hindered by the relatively small numbers of Labradors and great distances involved, leading to difficulty establishing breedings and bloodlines;16 at the start of the 1980s, home-born lab puppies for sale for sale were still regularly supplemented by further imports from overseas.16 Difficulties such as these initially led to Labradors being tacitly cross-bred to other types of retriever.16 In the 1990s, improved access to overseas shows and bloodlines is said to have helped this situation become regularised.16

lab puppies for sale are Very Good Natured

A Labrador participating in lab puppies for sale agility “Good-tempered, very agile. Excellent nose, soft mouth; keen love of water. Adaptable, devoted companion. Intelligent, keen and biddable, with a strong will to please. Kindly nature, with no trace of aggression or undue shyness.”

-UK Kennel Club standard43

Labradors are a well-balanced and versatile breed, adaptable to a wide range of functions as well as making very good pets. As a rule they are not excessively prone to being territorial, pining, insecurity, aggression, destructiveness, hypersensitivity, or other difficult traits which sometimes manifest in a variety of breeds, and as the name suggests, they are excellent retrievers. As an extension of this, they instinctively enjoy holding objects and even hands or arms in their mouths, which they can do with great gentleness (a Labrador can carry an egg in its mouth without breaking it)44. They are also known to have a very soft ‘feel’ to the mouth, as a result of being bred to retrieve game such as waterfowl. They are prone to chewing objects (though they can be trained out of this behavior). The Labrador Retriever’s coat repels water to some extent, thus facilitating the extensive use of the labs for sale in waterfowl hunting.

Coast Guard Mascout - Turk

Turk is a full blooded Golden Retriever and has been with Coast Guard Station Elizabeth City since 1996. So far he has achieved the rank of BMC (Chief Boatswain’s Mate — he’s a Chief Petty Officer, one of the highest enlisted ranks!). Turk is considered to be a vital part of the crew at the station. He is taken care of through a military veterinarian, as well as the crew. His favorite past times are sleeping, playing with his Cong toy, chasing birds, and swimming.

Here we have Bear, the now-retired mascot of Coast Guard Station Kenosha, who served there from 1990 to 2000. Bear is a pure-bred Chocolate Labrador Retriever. BMC Chad Curth told us that Bear “was transferred from his kennel to Station Kenosha PCS on 4 June 1990 as a puppy. He loved to ride the Station’s boats and even rode on the back of the Station’s jetski. Kenosha’s school children knew him by name because he was one of the most popular attractions at their yearly field trips to the Station. His medical care came from the Army veterinarians at the Great Lakes Vet Treatment Facility at Great Lakes Naval Training Center.”
